Timemore Black Mirror Basic+ Coffee Scale

Sold out
Original Price $80.00
Current Price $60.00

This is the Basic+ version and not the latest Basic 2 scale. Main upgrades with Basic 2 is the ability to change unit (g or oz) and flow rate.

The Timemore Black Mirror Scale offers all the basic features that you need from a coffee scale packed into a minimalist sleek black finish.  The plate is large enough to brew any style of manual brew method, yet with a small footprint and quick display, it can also be used for espresso brewing. The LED screen becomes visible through the top plate once you turn the scale on and it displays not only both time and measurements, but your battery life and you can turn the sound on or off.  With no extra edges or little gaps it’s easy to keep this set of scales clean.  Add a USB-C anti-dust plug to protect your scale charging port from dust, coffee and splashes.

Great little scale

Good size, easy to use. Holds a charge for a very long time. Great scale.

Gives a basic measurement, well made.

Very accurate and has a logical layout. I’m concerned however with the sealed rechargeable battery, can it be changed when it fails?

Precise, practical and elegant, but buttons are a bit finicky

Pros:
- It looks good. Very good! When off, it's like it doesn't even have a display. And all my appliances are in black and chrome, so it fits perfectly.
- The silicon mat makes it easy to clean and I like to know the scale is protected, even though it's water resistant. The ridges in the mat also make it really hard for liquid to escape it.
- Though the buttons are a bit finnicky (more on cons, below), their tap functions are the functions I use the most: start/reset timer and tare. I never have to hold or multi-tap a button except for when turning it off.
- It's good at what I really bought it for: precision! I'm very satisfied with it after using a cheap digital kitchen scale. What impresses me the most is how well it keeps a tare. Most scales I used get a bit off after a while, especially if you add and remove weight from it constantly. This one keeps it until you change it or turn it off, seemingly effortless. I tare it with my portafilter, grind coffee on it, check it, grind more or remove some, check it again, make a mistake, redo everything, and tare is still there, considering the portafilter a perfect 0.0g! Sometimes it will keep changing the first decimal place, but I understand it's rounding issues. If I add or remove a really small pinch of coffee, it stabilizes, as expected.

Cons, related to the controls:
- The touch buttons are EXTREMELY sensitive. When fitting it on my Gaggia, the power button is pressed by the drop of water under the steam wand if I forget to rotate it away first. The timer button makes a sound when I push it but the timer might not start. Because of the sound cue, I'm pretty sure the button registered 2 presses when that happens. So I always wait to make sure the time changes to 00:01 before looking away.
- Very rarely, the buttons don't register the tap. I haven't figured out why yet, but that's why I leave the sound on. To make sure I know when it works. I think it's when I push harder, but not sure yet.
- Multiple pushes of a button to do something or having to hold it for long is a bad user interface that wastes time. There should just be more buttons.

Would I buy it again? Definitely! It's a good value over money, improved my espresso, looks good and I almost never face the buttons issues I mentioned. Just had to be honest because they exist.
