Replace Your Filter Basket First

Your new espresso machine has arrived - what a thrill! Probably the last thing you're interested in doing is replacing a part.
But the filter basket is most likely an inexpensive, mass market part and should be binned immediately. Try this. Hold that stock basket up to the light. Are the holes in the bottom all identically uniform in size with none blocked? Are they clean punched - maybe laser cut, or rough edged? Is the capacity marked in grams on the basket? Stock baskets rarely have any marks at all. Poor perforations result in chanelleing and uneven shot extraction starting with your first cup. Sadly, some coffee fans never know how good the shots they pull might have tasted.
Even, predictable and consistent flow rate is an essential part of the espresso brewing equation.

Now on our 4th machine, I finally did the research and discovered a selection of precision filter baskets at I chose a VST 18g ringed for our Rocket R58, calibrated our grinder for our standard AM wakeup latte cups, and pulled the first new shots using our favorite Drumroaster Gold Seasonal Espresso from Duncan, BC, and there it was! Crema, aroma, flavour - rich and delicious coffee heaven as if directly from Drumroaster!
I could not believe it was the same beans as the previous day. The beauty here is it works with every kind of bean you put through that basket because that variable is now controlled and you can concentrate on the other subtleties of coffee experience.
You wouldn't put a cheap filter on your car - give your coffee the same break. You owe it to yourself.

Great addon

Quite satisfied with this filter, as an addition to my Rancilio Silvia. Made a noticeable difference, especially with the crema.
