Brewista Smart Scale II

Perfect if you like to get that perfect shot from your espresso machine. Tried a few different ones and this is the best of the bunch.

Caveat: I bought one of the unevenly molded scales on clearance. Coffee Addicts have been amazing with me in investigating, and ultimately, allowing me to return this to buy another scale. Some of this behaviour could be due to the uneven nature of the base.

I can't begin to describe how frustrated I am with this scale. In the first few months of use it seemed great. Cool functions, easy usage, great size. It seemed accurate in measurement.
Emphasis on "seemed accurate".
Over time I've learned that this scale calculates weight on an extreme delay (we are talking seconds). So your initial measurement after a tare is not what you think it is. Seems like a small thing, but what prompted my review today is measuring something to 14.5g, waiting a few seconds, it updating to 14.3, walking away to talk to my wife and coming back to a reading of 14.8.
If you do smaller doses like myself, where a difference of .1 - .2 actually makes a big difference in your espresso shots, I would think about avoiding this scale, it will drive you mad.

Disclaimer: I did buy an imperfect unit at a hefty discount (half price) So I had fairly low expectations going in because this seemed like a great deal. The defect was described as "Scale sits uneven". I expected the feet to be a little off or something but the whole unit seems to have a curve in it, likely a defect after the clamshell plastic chasis was moulded. This does not seem to have effected the function of the scale at all.
I've used a lot of scales and balances over the years so I have a little perspective, from Ohaus and Mettler Toledo balances, and Mettler Toledo Analytical Balances at my workplace and my personal $20 scale from amazon.
I can't imagine paying full price for this scale, the features just don't seem worth the added cost. I think this would be good for pour over in mode 6. In Mode 5 I feel like could be improved easily for espresso use by having the timer automatically stop when the shot is finished being pulled, there's no point in it displaying the time where I pulled the cup off if its not the exact same time that I stop the pump. I ended up defaulting back to mode 1 with manual tare and manual timing because it just works well enough. Its a slight improvement over my $20 scale. I was greatly dissapointed to open the charge port to see the little rubber connection instantly crumble away and seperate. I'll give the Brewista credit where due, aside from the manufacturing defects, the build quality seems excellent. I pulled it apart to investigate the bend in the chasis to find a simple interior with lots of silicone sealant and glue to keep the water out of all the electrical connections where you don't want it to go. It really does seem like this scale could take quite the beating and multiple drownings without much fuss. It also seems to have less latency vs my cheapo scale. A downside is the only units available are grams, so if you want to switch to ounces or any other units for other uses, you're stuck with grams only. The Silicone cover was something I didn't think I would want or need but its a nice touch that I keep on the scale now and the water channels allow spills to go over the side instead of pooling on top. I also like that its not very tall, space is precious below my machine. I'll enjoy using it for now but I guess this means I need to start pinching pennies for an Acaia or something.

I like this scale. Is precise and easy to use. I like having manual and auto time/tare options. Battery life seems good and the USB charging is convenient
