Our Single Origin Stories: Meet Bryce!

Welcome to our Origin Stories! We're introducing our Coffee Addicts one blog post at a time so that you can get to know us and our stories. Make sure to drop your comments down below if you relate to our stories, to share your own experiences, or just to say hi!

My coffee journey beginnings are pretty similar to others I’ve heard. Over the 2020 lockdown while working in essential retail and having recently moved 800km from my family, connecting with others and maintaining relationships was HARD. At this point, I wasn’t even a fan of coffee. However, it was an excuse to connect with the team I worked with. Our little crew would take turns buying our rounds of coffee every day, of course always needing a second set of hands to help carry it back to the store. It was one of few opportunities we could spend one on one with each other, not limited to having one person out front and one person in the back all day. We were all able to bond, learn about each other, and connect more than we had previously. It was these little day to day interactions that really introduced connecting over coffee to me.

I eventually took this newfound appreciation home. With my dinky second hand electric grinder and a French press off the clearance rack of a big box store, I could brew anything. As long as it was a French press or cold brew. This is where I started down the rabbit hole learning about different recipes. Brew methods. Grind size makes a difference. That coffee could be more involved than just scooping into a drip machine. What was this? I could bring out different flavours? I could tweak my brew to be less acidic? I could actually taste the notes that the bag describes?

The floodgates were open, and I found myself getting more involved in a delicious new hobby, flying down the rabbit hole into exploring pour overs, immersion brews, and espresso drinks. Finding what origins, tasting notes, and recipes I liked the best. Carving out that 5 minutes every morning to completely disconnect, and enjoy the process of making my cup of coffee.

The whole time, I’d be both passively listening and actively watching a multitude of coffee enthusiasts. Curating my recommended feeds to be almost exclusively coffee creators, their passion for the drink driving my curiosity and interest even further. Understanding more about the science, the process, the art, all layered together. Coffee really evolved from being a drink, to a piece of connection, to a full on hobby and interest for me. To the point I left my former industry of a decade, to jump headfirst into coffee as a career at Coffee Addicts.

Just saw the ‘under $1100’ video and the best line in the whole video was at the end: “Don’t be afraid to make a bad cup of coffee”! Thanks for reminding us you learn more from failure than from success.
Best wishes in your new career Bryce!
