The Calderón family has been farming in the Dota Valley of Tarrazú, Costa Rica for three generations, and El Maracuya is one of their most exciting chapters yet. This two-hectare plot was a granadilla farm for over 40 years before the family made the decision to replant it entirely with Typica Mejorado five years ago. A bold call, and one that's paying off beautifully. Processed at their Los Angeles micro-mill as a white honey, the cherries are harvested at peak ripeness, run through a mechanical demucilager that removes most but not all of the fruit mucilage, and then sun-dried on raised beds. The result sits between the clarity of a washed and the sweetness of a fuller honey, clean and precise but with an added depth that straight washed processing can't quite offer.
Part of Detour's Superbrew Series, El Maracuya earns its spot with ease. Grown at 1900 MASL, the Typica Mejorado variety shines with an elegance that's almost tea-like: white tea delicacy up front, fresh peach sweetness mid-cup, and a rum and raisin richness that lingers warmly through the finish. Refined, nuanced, and quietly luxurious. A fleeting opportunity to experience Typica Mejorado at its most articulate: the Calderón family's work speaks for itself, and there's a limited supply.
