The Motta Spring Loaded Tamper is very nicely made and attractive; feels good in your hand. The outer ring keeps the tamper level as promised and the diameter is perfect. However, I don't love the way the tamping process works. The pressure on the coffee depends on how full the filter cup is. The spring increases force as it it compresses: a full filter will be pressed harder than a less full one (for the same spring). So you will get consistent results for any consistent dose but pressure will vary form dose to dose and bean to bean. I'm not sure that matters. Related is the fact that you can't feel the coffee compressing; the tamper stops hard when the full plunge depth is reached. This is as designed, but I don't like the experience.
So, in summary, the Motta Spring Loaded Tamper dos what it promised to do but may or may not suit your preferences.
