BWT bestmax is a simple, practical, all-round filtration solution developed for the diverse requirements of the food service sector. It provides superb quality water for a full coffee taste on top of protecting your equipment against scale buildup. The new High Efficiency Technology (HET) provides even more effective water optimization, resulting in a consistently high water quality for hot and cold drinks.
BWT features a unique adjustable bypass allowing you to set the bypass according to the hardness of your water. This ensures that you have enough minerals to maximize taste, but not enough to cause scale buildup in your equipment.
This is for the filter only and you must order the head separately if you don't already own one.
BWT bestmax water optimization stands for:
- Highest efficiency with 5 stage filtration
- Highly efficient hard water treatment for scale protection
- Connection technology for all filter types & sizes
- Simple filter exchange
- Direct, one-off bypass setting at the filter head
- Includes filtration of the bypass water
- Can be used horizontally and vertically
- Automatic shut-off valve when changing filter
- Back flow shut-off valve integrated in filter head

Five-Stage Filtration with an Adjustable Bypass — Calibrated to Your Water
The BWT Bestmax is the core water filter in the BWT range for coffee and food service — a plumbed-in, 5-stage filtration cartridge designed to remove limescale-causing compounds, particles, chlorine, and off-flavours while retaining enough mineral content to support good extraction. The defining operational feature is the adjustable bypass at the filter head: rather than filtering all water to the same output regardless of incoming hardness, the bypass lets you dial in the proportion of unfiltered water that blends with the filtered output. In areas with very hard water, a lower bypass setting reduces mineral content more aggressively; in areas where water is already relatively soft, a higher bypass setting retains more of the natural mineral character. The result is consistently suitable water for your specific supply — not a one-size-fits-all output. Karen from Kingston sums it up: great filters for hard water.
High Efficiency Technology (HET) and Scale Protection
The current Bestmax uses BWT's High Efficiency Technology for more effective water optimisation compared to earlier cartridge generations — higher capacity per cartridge and more consistent output quality through the cartridge's service life. The 5-stage process handles limescale protection, particle removal, chlorine and organic compound reduction, and mineral balancing across a single cartridge change. The filter can be installed horizontally or vertically, and an automatic shut-off valve prevents spillage during cartridge swaps. The backflow shut-off valve in the filter head protects against contamination during filter changes. Available in sizes X, S, V, M, L, XL, and 2XL to match different machine capacities and usage volumes; the full technical datasheet with per-size capacity specifications is linked on this page.
Important: Filter Head Required Separately — and How It Compares to the Premium
Like all Bestmax cartridges, this filter requires a compatible BWT Besthead Quick-Change Filter Head, sold separately at Coffee Addicts. If you do not already own a Besthead, you must order it separately. The Bestmax (this product, $130) and the Bestmax Premium ($175) share the same filter head and size range. The key difference is filtration stages: the Bestmax Premium adds BWT Magnesium Technology, which actively enriches the filtered water with magnesium in exchange for calcium — optimising the mineral profile specifically for espresso extraction. The standard Bestmax provides excellent scale protection and taste improvement without the Magnesium Technology stage. For most food service and home espresso setups, the standard Bestmax is the practical choice; the Premium is the choice where extraction optimisation is the priority alongside scale protection.
