BWT bestprotect is a filter solution that not only prevents the formation of limescale and gypsum, but also ensures a consistently high pH value. It also provides excellent equipment protection and prevents corrosion problems on stainless steel parts.
This is for the filter only and you must order the head separately if you don't already own one.
The BWT bestprotect filter does not support the filter head bypass and the bypass must be set to 0.

When Corrosion Is the Problem, Not Just Scale
The BWT Bestmax range addresses scale — hard water calcium compounds that deposit on heating elements and boiler surfaces. The Bestprotect solves a different problem: water that is soft or acidic enough that scale isn't the primary risk, but where the low pH of the filtered or source water is actively corroding stainless steel components over time. Acidic water attacks the passivation layer on stainless steel — the thin oxide layer that prevents rust and pitting — and over years of daily use through an espresso machine boiler, group head, or steam wand, corrosion from low-pH water causes the same kind of costly internal damage as scale, just through a different mechanism. The BWT Bestprotect addresses both: it prevents limescale and gypsum deposits through 5-stage filtration and simultaneously maintains a consistently high pH in the filtered water, reducing the corrosive effect on stainless steel internal components.
Critical Installation Note — Bypass Must Be Set to Zero
The Bestprotect has one installation requirement that differs from the Bestmax and Bestmax Premium: the filter head bypass must be set to 0. Unlike the Bestmax, which uses an adjustable bypass to blend filtered and unfiltered water to the right mineral balance, the Bestprotect requires all water to pass through the filter — no bypass. Allowing unfiltered water to bypass the cartridge would introduce low-pH water back into the output stream, defeating the corrosion protection function. Set the bypass to 0 at the filter head when installing. This is stated on the live page and in the BWT datasheet (linked on this page), but it is the most common installation error for buyers familiar with the Bestmax's bypass adjustment. As with all Bestmax-series cartridges, the BWT Besthead Quick-Change Filter Head is required separately if you don't already own one.
Where the Bestprotect Fits in the BWT Range
The BWT Bestprotect ($140) sits alongside the Bestmax ($130) and Bestmax Premium ($175) as a plumbed-in cartridge using the same Besthead filter head — but it addresses a distinct water chemistry scenario. If your water is hard and you want scale protection with mineral balance for extraction, the Bestmax is the practical choice. If you want scale protection plus magnesium enrichment for extraction optimisation, the Bestmax Premium adds the Magnesium Technology stage. If your water is soft or acidic and corrosion of stainless steel parts is the primary concern, the Bestprotect is the appropriate filter.
